Even though there are not standard sizes for the perfect dimension or shape for selecting a watch, there are some clues you need to know for achieving a well-balanced, comfortable and elegant appearance. Your watch must make your wrist comfortable in the first place and for this reason, it must be suitable to your wrist size. Such parameters as case diameter, case depth, cord width and cord material are also very important for selecting a man watch.

Wrist size is the most important detail!

You need to know your wrist size first in order to find the most suitable watch for your wrist. The thickness of your wrist is the most important detail in watch selection. Therefore, it is the first step to determine the category of your wrist which includes very thin, thin, medium and thick options for selecting the right watch.

You should measure your wrist with a simple method. Wrap your wrist with a piece of paper and mark the point where the two ends are connected. Open the paper and measure it with the help of a flat scale. Your wrist is very thin if it varies between 14-16 cm. Your wrist is thin if it varies between 16-17 cm. Your wrist is at average thickness if it varies between 17-18 cm and your wrist is thick if it is above 18 cm.

You should prefer small and minimal designs and avoid of pretty large watch designs if your wrist is very thin. A watch at the diameter of 38 mm is an ideal choice for men with a very thin wrist. It is the best to select a thin watch if you have a thin wrist. 40mm watches with a thin case at an average diameter are ideal and the case thickness should not exceed 8mm. If your wrist is at average thickness, you should avoid of extremely large or small watches. The watches at the diameter of 42mm will ensure a good appearance. A thick wrist requires a large watch. The watches with a case at the diameter of 44-46mm are ideal or you can select a slightly larger watch.

Watches by their case diameter

Case diameter is another important point to consider for purchasing a new watch. Generally, the diameters of men’s watches vary between 38mm and 46mm. All watches beyond this range can be considered to be very small or large. You are supposed to prioritize your wrist size to find the best size in this range. If the size of your wrist is 14cm-18cm, a watch at the diameter of 38mm, 40mm or 42mm will be suitable for you. If your wrist is 18 cm or thicker, you can select a larger case at the diameter of 44-46mm.

What should the case depth be?

The second important aspect in watch selection is the thickness of the watch case. As a general rule, the case depth should be directly proportional to the case diameter. The thickness of a watch at the diameter of 38mm to 42mm is 7mm. The thickness of the watches at the diameter of 44mm and higher is about 9mm or thicker.

Ideal cord width

The watches whose cord width is as much as half of the case diameter are in the ideal size. Rates can differ depending on preferences and tastes; however, the cord width of a watch with a 42mm case should generally be 21mm. The watches with a thin cord are optimal for the men with a thin wrist whereas wide metal styles offer a good appearance for the men with a thick wrist.

The materials used in the cord are also important

If you want to choose the perfect watch for your wrist, you should pay attention to the material used in the cord as much as the cord width. The watches with a metal cord which seem to be heavier and thicker in comparison with the ones with a leather cord add an elegant appearance to the men with a thick wrist.

For selecting a watch, you firstly determine your wrist thickness category by learning the size of your wrist. After then, you can achieve the perfect appearance in consideration of the abovementioned cord and case details.
